Took advice and attempted this CCW with the addition of the lost man creek trail loop, starting from flint ridge CG parking area
and have some strong opinions- the first trail section, California coastal trail Tey-wo-lew, was severely overgrown and had thick brush including stinging nettles and poison oak, which made riding difficult. Had to walk a decent part of it and was hating life while doing so, lol. I would instead highly recommend taking Adler Camp road, which is a gravel road that parallels it and eventually connects with the trail from the way the route is currently set/how I did it. After being on Newton Drury Parkway for a bit the route took me to Ossagon trail; the first part of which being spectacular, but became submerged under a couple feet of water once you reached the coast. After trudging through the first underwater section of the Davidson trail (prob a quarter mile), the trail conditions improved slightly, though there were a few downed trees obstructing the trail and overgrown sections that took a long time to walk through. The trail eventually diverged from the trees towards the coast, and this part was super cool and almost entirely ridable. Saw the waterfall and some elk grazing right alongside me! The trail eventually connected with the more established trails by fern canyon car park, and the gravel climb out was super fun (especially passing cars, lol). After that, I got to the lost man creek trail, which was a spectacular climb; closed to cars, decent road conditions, and a doable but challenging grade. Unfortunately, I sliced my sidewall 3 miles from the top and had to hike to the top then hitchhike back to where I started from a parking lot. This is one of those routes I would classify as type 2 fun and recommend doing once
I've ridden this twice and I highly suggest doing this counterclockwise because Davidson Trail (Coastal Trail) is very hard to find through Fern Canyon coming from the south. I turned back my first time out before doing it CCW. It's a beautiful ride with a nice mix of gravel, singletrack, and road. I was there over Thanksgiving and it was quiet—only a few hikers and little car traffic. A few downed trees along the southern portion of Davidson Trail (not road) but easy to navigate under or around. LOTS of poison ivy along the northern portion of Davidson Trail, between Ossagon and Fern Canyon, so bring Technu if you're allergic. Saw fresh bear scat on a spur trail I explored so bear spray wouldn't be a terrible idea.
Route from visitor Center to Davidson Road past Gold Bluffs and passed fern is good. After that it’s either under water or a mud bog. We could not get past the fern area
April 5th. The section from park office to Davidson road to Gold Bluffs north to Fern is OKAY but north of fern is a creek and either under water or a mud pit
